GPS Help

I buy marine stuff for my bike because of the vibration and water
issues. Look at the Magellan eXplorist 200 ($100.00 USD @ Wal-Mart),
it's a handy lil' SOB.

I've used the Quest on the bike and it is a very nice unit. I especially
liked the ability to use it off the bike (runs on it's own internal battery
for a claimed 7 hours) doing routing in the motel while I was hold up for
the night due to a Nor. Cal. thunderstorm.

I also have the 2610 version (okay, a BMW Navigator II+) which sells for a
lot more $'s but the Quest is still my favorite on a bike. The Quest II has
more memory for maps and that is a BIG plus. The 2610 has the ability to
store data on a CF card so you can load the U.S. on a 2 gig card and be off.
The smaller size makes it less obtrusive too on the bike (the yacky ability
gives me directions pretty well over the smaller screen via helmet
earphones).

The TomTom Rider maps seem to be better for the European market though.
Garmin=U.S. TomTom=Europe. Go figger.

I too have heard good things about the TomTom RIDER - I like that it's
got voice nav, so you don't have to look at the screen all the time,
it'll just be in your ear. Then you can concentrate on steering, etc.
Which I think is probably extra important in unfamiliar areas.

I have a Garmin GPSMAP60CSx with 1gig SDcard, City Navigator North
America and a 12v plug with a R.A.M bar mount. Works perfect. No
vibration. Very happy. Then I loaded every HD shop in N America using
software that was free on the garmin site. I had to search the POI sources
through the garmin site for the costom POI's for the shops some are free
some are pay one of the free ones had the download. ( POI = Points Of
Intrest) I also use this unit on my ATV and truck with the same mount.

oh ya i can read a paper map but it is kinda hard to read with 70mph of wind
in your hair and i also do the geocaching thing to i can do more then one
thing at a time

two sickles. I'll have to buy a handlebar GPS holder to fit my GL1800, but
the GPS will be in whichever vehicle I choose to use. I paid less than half
the price asked for "motorcycle GPS's" and will get four times the use out
of it....

I can not comment on that unit, as I have an Garmin IQUE 3600 with a
modified beanbag mount in my car, but I can say that in sunlight the
screen washes out, without my reading glasses I can not read the
directions and with them I can not see to drive. As a handheld, not in
the mount, the batteries are good for 4 hours. Also its a real pain when
it tells be where the address is and it's in the next block. Also the
CPU is much too slow to use reliably on roundabouts.

How many channels does that unit have? The C340 uses 12, and I believe
that's the number of satellites that can be used. If so, seems like it
should be more accurate than some other models.

It's 12 channel and the specs are at

It can get down to less than 10 ft. As its full GPS/PDA it is not
waterproof so using on a bike could be risky. I should probably update
my maps but they are expensive.

If I were buying again I would check the unit first in bright sunlight
and check battery life. The other thing it does that I do not like is
it pops up an enlarged window before the turn but it comes up too soon
and covers up the streets before the turn. I would like to delay that
screen and be able to control its position but I can not. Also I use it
with an FM transmitter and play through the car stereo and that helps on
voice quality.
