Default GPS Help

I: am considering buying a GPS to mount on my bike, I was wondering if
anybody has had any experience with these units and could suggest a good one
to buy. And why do you suggest a particular model

I need maps for Canada & USA

Thanks

Cj

Depends on exactly what you want to do with it - if you need it to be
portable as well as mounted on the bike, I find the Garmin GPSMap 60Cx
can't be beat. It's a colour unit which you can just as easily be used
for Geocaching as travelling...

I have one and I love it. Have also had an eMap, Etrex Legend, 76s and
a 12XL, all Garmin, and they are the best, IMHO.

P.S. Best place to look for info or buy one would be

All I can say is that if you go for a cheap model, make sure it can
withstand the vibration of a bike and the wetness of a shower.

I just got the "Harley - Garmin Road Trek Quest" for my Road King Classic.
It mounts either on the handlebars or a fairing. I love it. It'll give you
verbal direction for turns along with a graphic turn indicator. I find it
keeps me "heads up" for traffic when I would otherwise be looking for street
names. The screen is fully visible in bright sunlight (although you don't
need to be looking at the screen) and the unit is weather proof.

I originally wanted the Tom Tom Rider, but the Garmin unit was half the
price and a little smaller. An added incentive was a sale that the
dealership had going which gave me an additional 20% off. It can also be
used in the car or as a handheld when neeeded.

GARMIN tends to be the market leader. - Buy the name, not OEM
overpriced variants from BMW or Harley.

Nothing with a hard drive

Having all of the US and Canada is nice, but not often necessary. You
can load many days riding into virtually every modern unit out there.

IT MUST BE WATERPROOF - Not all of them are.

THE DISPLAY MUST BE SUNLIGHT READABLE - Not all of them are.

BATTERY OPERATION IS NICE - in case you want to do some hiking or to
carry the unit on a bicycle, use it on a boat that isn't wired or such.

I use a Garmin 276c with a 512 Meg data. You may want something
fancier or smaller.

What bike do you have your GPS mounted to and what type of mount are you
using?

Thanks,
Marcus

It was mounted on a Kawasaki Concours last year - now it's on my
FJR1300A. I have it mounted on the left control mount using a
RAM-B-309-1, a short arm and a diamond base:

Works great.

Interesting to note that GPS Central has the RAM B201-A for less than
the price listed on the RAM / US page...

http://gpscentral.ca/accessories/ramaccessories.htm

RAM-B-201-A 1 3/4" Arm $10.95 CAD

I agree that the short arm is the way to go. I had the 60C and 76S on
the standard 3" arms and both vibrated too much. Just got the short arm
this week and it's perfectly steady no matter what kind of road I'm on.
