suzuki sv650 vs sv1000

hi,
i've ridden bikes all my like. triumph 650's and sportsters when i was young, and harley 80 incher's the last 15 years. but i'm ready for a change. i really like cruising the hills and canyons. i like going fast, but not racing. harleys can't really take advantage of canyon riding.
so i asked a couple people if i wanted to get into japanes bikes that aren't strictly for racing, and you don't have to rev the bike out to 14K to get power, what would be a good bike for me to buy.
i'm not rich so whatever i buy i won't be changing for a while, so i want something powerful enough, i like the torque of my harley, so i've been looking at the suzuki sv65o and sv1000. what i read is the sv650 is a good entry evel bike, but friends say it wouldn't be enough power for me after driving harley's for so long. they recommend the sv1000.
i'm going to test drive one this weekend, the sv1000, but i know the seller will tell me mostly what i want to hear to sell the bike.
i'm a good rider, but japanese stlye bikes are new to me. i don't want anything that an insane race machine. and i really don't like wheelies. but i do like power. the thing is, which bike has enough, and that i won't outgrow and want more in a year from now.
also i've heard that the sv1000 had some eletrical problems with some bikes. i'm looking at a 1995 model with 5k miles on it, for $5400, and is is excellent condition. i'd apprectiate any comments by people that know these bikes and can give advice on the pro's and con's of each, and any other useful things i might need to know before buying something.
