Default Racing Resurrection

Flamin' Duc Racing disbanded in 2002, after four regional titles and
immeasurable amounts of pure fun. George (my racing partner and
competitor in FDR) and I had a great time, but we weren't gettting any
younger, and though we briefly discussed the merits of moving up to
AMA pro racing, both of us recognized that spending all that money
just to be a "lapper" or "backmarker" privateer was nothing either of
us wanted to do.

This year, a new endurance racing series was formed, Moto-ST,
featuring three classes of twin-cylinder racing bikes, all based on
production U.S. motorcycles, and defined by weight and horspower. The
lowest (and slowest) class requires a maximum of 75 horsepower on the
race organizer's dyno, and a minimum of 360 pounds on their certified
scale, after the race. Races range from 2 hours to 8 hours, and some
are run by mileage with a time cut-off. Details can be found at
http://www.moto-st.com/

Anyway, after much discussion (mostly centered around age and marital
status) George and I have decided to resurrect the race team as
Screaming Duc Racing (the Flamin' adjective was the subject of a
certain amount of controversy the first time around) for the 2008
racing season. For the first time, we'll not only be a race team,
but we'll also be racing together rather than against one another.
We're going to campaign a Ducati 800 Super Sport, and it will be
prepared (at least the prep that we can't or don't want to do
ourselves) by Donnie Unger at Duc Pond Motorsports in Winchester,
VIrginia.

Should be fun. At our ages, and having been out of competition as
long as we have, we're not going in with any expectations. We just
hope to have fun, put together a professional-LOOKING effort (!), and
enjoy the cameraderie of the track one more time..... Hell, we may be
the lappers or backmarkers in Moto-ST.... who knows until we get out
there?

AWESOME!
I'm friends with a few racers in the GST class that are(or were) doing
quite well. I think Richie Morris racing(GST class with Dan Bilansky and
Shawn Higbee as the riders) may be done for the year though with Shawn
Higbee's major crash in Iowa.

James Gang Racing(GST Class) are good friends of mine, and *REALLY* nice
people. Paul James helped the wife and I bit around Road America this
year(showing us his lines, and critiquing us a bit).

Will you go to the Iowa Speedway?
MotoST is kinda in disarray right now.

Awesome that you guys are re-forming.
Make sure you stay safe, and perhaps try and get on the board to make sure
things are done right.

Endurance racing with a couple of guys in their 50's on paint shakers, no

Tim.

Thanks, Bob. However, just to set the record straight; neither of us
in in our 50's..... yet!

Have fun. Try not to get hurt, crash too many times, etc etc.

Have room on your fairing for an official AMS sticker? Don't know what that
might look like, but the more creative around here could probably come up
with one.

Man, that sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. Good luck, maybe you
can show those kids a thing or two.

Well, over the weekend, we acquired the bones of our Moto-ST Screaming
Duc Racing Ducati 800SS endurance racer. We found an insurance write-
off 2005 model with a salvage title that had been stolen, lightly
crashed-n-rashed, then recovered.

Price was actually a little lower than our budget, which is good,
since it looks like neither of us have the time to drive 12 hours to
pick up the thing, so we're probably going to have it freighted
directly to Duc Pond Motorsports (our race sponsor) in Winchester,
Virginia.

Then the *real* spending begins....

(The good news is that a stock 800SS puts out close to the class
maximum horsepower, so no extensive engine mods are required.)

My son Justin made a road trip down to Birmingham, Alabama this past
weekend and picked up the new Screaming Duc Racing Moto-ST race
(currently rat) bike.

George picked it up from Justin today, stripped all the street
equipment off it, threw out the damaged stuff, and transported it to
DucPond Motorsports in Winchester, Virignia, where owner and longtime
Ducati racer Donnie Unger will be building the bike for us.

Here's the initial parts list:

Ducati 1000SS adjustable fork legs
EBC full floating front rotors
SS front brake lines
Aluminum fairing stays
Sharkskin Ducati 999 bodywork
ARC Fabrication Ti 2-1 undertail exhaust system
CFM clip-ons and rearsets
Power Commander
Yellow/Red custom paint job
Dry Break fueling system
Daytona steering damper
Penske shock
Custom race wiring harness.

The bike needs to weigh at 360 pounds, so we'll wait a little while to
see if we're going to need to (or be able to) put a Ducati 999
aluminum monoposto rear subframe on it or not.

We'll be selling the street stuff on eBay, and putting my 2003 Ducati
620 Sport back into street trim and selling it so that the proceeds
can be dumped into the racebike. (Boo.)

The final round of this year's Moto-ST series is October 20, the 8
hours of Daytona, so George and I will be down there checking out the
scene.

We probably need to get our racing credentials reinstated, too! I'll
have to talk to the CCS licensing authorities about that.

Tim
