I just noticed google maps has a terrain button that wasn't there yesterday.
This is a cool feature.

If you go here, you can get a map that is four times as large.

http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispub...82072349623507

Enter the name of the feature you want to look at and what state and county
it's in. You get a list of all features with the same name. Pick the one you
want.

Click on google maps and "hybrid" to see the terrain with roads labeled.

Google Maps is awesome. It makes mapquest look like an old C-64.

Thanks for the link. This seems a good way to locate a feature that you
don't already know the location of, but the map doesn't seem much bigger to
me. Maybe when printed it is?

The google map window using USGS GNIS query is twice as large on my screen as
the Google Maps window at Google Home.

I can use it without having any other software installed on my computer.

And, if I drag the map around to re-center it, the details gradually fill in
so I can follow the route numbers that various riders use to describe their
long distance rides.

A lot of riders get so deep into the group scene, all their pictures are of
their riding buddies and the pictures are all taken in a parking lot in front
of some restaurant or motel.

But they brag so much about how great the ride is, I use USGS GNIS to locate
the towns they mention and the routes they use and I use Google Images and
Wikipedia to see if I would ever want to go there at all.

Look Krusty, not everyone is a solo rider. I get too much solo action
as it is because I'm disabled and am alone most of the week. Even back
20 years ago when I lived in NORCAL I'd seldom ride alone. (if not
just me and a girlfriend on the back on a ride to Yosimite and the
backside of the Sierra's) on a MC camping trip.

Nowadays I occasionally ride to my favorite breakfast stop alone but
there's always someone there I know to sit and chat with. However most
of my rides consist of at least one other companion. Hell if I drop my
bike at a stop light or sign I don't even have the strenght (with my
bad heart) to even pick up my bike alone. Not to even mention riding
in tandom is more fun and if one go's down for some reason there's
always someone there to go for help or not just die alone. If I was
riding solo when the deer T-boned me riding 30MPH I wouldn't be
writing this now, if you catch my drift there Krusty.

Also you don't have to ride in formation on group rides. Some folks
like to lay back and watch the scenery. That's fine they know where to
meet the rest of the group or the group will stop and wait at
predetermined points. As far as scenery goes I've seen a good deal of
the western states and Maine, NJ, Miss, Texas, Al, LO and some of
Alaska in my 62 years, so lay off with the sanctimony as it's obvious
who you were pointing your sharp stick at. I 'm also imagining at your
tender age you're starting to slow down your nature walks a tad.

Additionally, my dual; group of 14 riders I posted pictures of was
probably the largest group ride I've participated in in at least 6
years. Normal numbers are 2-6 riders max.

Finally, I'll bet I've seen just as many roads on and off the pavement
as you ever have. SoCAL dosen't have an exclusive on beautiful
scenery, especially considering the 150 miles radious of smog covering
the area.

"Sanctimony"?

"Sanctimony" is completely irrelevant to the discussion. "Sanctimony" was
originally a term that just meant "holiness" about 1000 years ago, but has
since gained the baggage of hypocrisy due to the class struggle between the
Roman Catholic church and the nobility.

Both classes were doing what was forbidden by the holy scriptures...

There's nothing about the definition of "sanctimony" that forbids me from
remarking on how many riders consider the group ride to be so much more
important than the destination or the route that all their pictures are of
each other, standing around in a parking lot.

There is nothing "sanctimonious" about using Google Maps and Google Images
and USGS and Wikipedia to investigate whether or not a particular area is
worth visiting.

>as it's obvious who you were pointing your sharp stick at.

Early this week it was Battleax who was out to get you...

A famous science fiction writer once said something like, "Never insult
anyone by accident, unless it's Bob Nixon, then it cannot be helped."

Nah, you're not being sanctimonious, or even racist, or homophobic,
when you point that out. You're just being a fool. Most people only
get their cameras out when they STOP riding, you fusty old cynic.
When they're RIDING down a great road, they enjoy the ride, they don't
stop to take PICTURES of the road. Sheesh. You should be glad they
post the route so you can go ALONE and enjoy the road without being
bothered by human companionship.
