Rick, he doesn't need a "lowering kit."
The rear shocks are air assit on the '87. The fronts are also. Let some
air out. You can remove the seat from the bike, turn it over and remove the
staples holding down the cover. Expose the foam, and undercut the foam to
lower the seat height. Once you do this, have him check it again. He needs
to be able to sit on the bike flat footed to be legal. Also, tell him never
drop the bike unless someone else is around. The '87 weights 960 lbs. dry.
