Default OT: New Toys In The Garage

It was a tough call. I really really really really really really really
really really really really really really really really really really really
really really really really really really really really really really really
really really really really....

.... wanted an IronMan 250 mig welder with a spool gun to start doing some
work with aluminum... But for 2 grand I figured the only one in the house
who would get any real enjoyment out of it was me. Sure I planned to build
some cool stuff with it, but mostly for ME. Maybe for my birthday.

Christmas is coming up and I was hoping, but alas I found another toy
instead. Well actually two of them.

http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/6457/617ctnyv5.png

By the time I was 12 I could drive. My mom taught me how to drive taking
the trash to the dump in our old 57 Dodge pickup truck. Can't do that any
more. Puttting a kid behind the wheel of a truck around here is just plain
crazy. It was always illegal, but where I grew up I could drive on desert
roads without another vehicle around for miles.

Anyway, I was thinking, we got 5 acres here and there are tons of places
that are legal to do some off road driving. A pair of these might be good
to start teaching basic skills. Not road stuff, but how to go and stop and
not run over a bush, etc...

Besides... THEY LOOK LIKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF FUN!!!!!

There went my welder.

They should drop ship from the factory tommorrow and
be delivered to my shop by the end of next week. Now I just have to figure
out one thing. How to keep myself from taking them out for a spin before
Christmas. Especially since I have to do some assembly and test them
first... Ah... Now it would make me an irresponsible daddy if I didn't
thoroughly test them first right. LOL.

Seriously to start out with I'll set up a block on the throttle linkage to
limit their speed. I figure to put an hour meter on them too so I can dole
out useage or limit useage as a reward/punishment to the kids. 3 As on your
report card. 3 extra hours of useage over the next month. Got an F... in
PE. No cart time for you this month.

Bob, who makes that rig?

A friend of mine bought a couple of Polaris quad runners, one for him
and another for his 20 year old son. After a few useages, they languish
in my friend's garage now. Brand new too.

These are made by Manco. My dad and I had a pair of their 3 wheel ATVs many
years ago. I used the heck out of mine and I got about ten years of hard
use out of mine for hunting and trapping and just plain exploring. My dad
still has his, but it needs a new motor. He wore it out. That is a Manco
Intruder II in the picture. My kids are much younger (11 & 13) so I suspect
they will want to use them much more than your friend's kid. They are not
in the same class as an ATV IMO, but I think the skills learned will better
translate into on road driving later in life.

I should mention that my friend is positively anal about keeping his
stuff looking like new. That's the main reason his shit stays in the
garage, Harleys included.

His son doesn't want to deal with the after-ride cleanup I would
imagine, so he always has something else he has to be doing when my
friend asks him to go riding the quads with him.

Yeah, I like my stuff, clean and shiny, but to be honest, that's usually one
of the last things on my list of things to do. Even my bass boat only gets
wiped down quick most days instead of washed and waxed like it should. My
bikes usually get washed about twice a year before a big run or soemthing
like that.
