Then you never heard a twin cam when it over-heated, when the circuitry
told it to slow down. (it's normal!)
Mine became "The big spud putterer" when I drove into NY with Len a few
years ago(summer), when we were both stuck on a damned bridge for what
seemed like forever.

"The pat-ta-lope" is what comes from the S L O W idle speed, you ding bats.
The new bikes have a higher idle speed.
That's all there is to it.

I was amazed how slowly TNFH got the idle on his knucklehead and SNIFF
the year before last. It sat there with a wiggly, wobbly slow putter
that could not have been over 500 RPM. It was pretty cool.

But do you know why they go Potato Potato?
Because of the common crank pin and the V arrangement of the
cylinders. The pistons do not fire 360 degrees apart. The first one
fires at 315 degrees and the second fires at 405 degrees.

Yeah, from the need to maintain decent oil pressure at idle, I think.
I wonder if using a better oil pump and higher bypass spring would allow for
lower idle speeds?

Ironhorse,
I heard that several years ago when the metric V-Twins first came out, one
of them had the electronic ignition progeammed so it would cause an
intermittant miss at idle. They were trying to emulate the sound of a
Harley-Davidson. Also heard Harley sued, as the sound is copyrighted, and
won. About half the guys at work ride metric V-Twins and you can always tell
the difference between them and a Harley by the sound. The metrics sound
like a popcorn popper and like they don't have a soul. :-)

To the best of my knowledge Harley dropped the law suit. I know they didn't
win it.

I seem to recall that a court ruled that HD could not patent,
copywrite whatever a sound and the MoCo lost or dropped it

I've gotten my Guzzi Cal down to about 750 rpms at idle, and with
straight through fishtails, I do believe it "potato's" better than my
'06
H-D does. Not the same sound, but similar. Definitely not a typical
metric sound though. Very distinctive. If you saw Dirty Harry's Magnum
Force, you'd have heard the big Guzzi El Dorados "potato'ing" through
the pier shed on SF's waterfront. SFPD used to use them. (But the
actual bike that went off the pier into the bay was a Triumph, for
some reason. Maybe they didn't want wreck a perfectly good classic El
Dorado).

This myth keeps growing. I heard that the only reason HD sued is
because a metric brand was using HD sounds in their metric
commercials. Not trying to patent the sound, just trying to keep
others from capitalizing on it.
I may be wrong. It's happened.
