For any of you who have been up here to visit, or have been tattooed
by Kathy Body from Life Itself, may be currently watching news reports
of an explosion, fire and subusquent collapse of one of our historic
downtown core buildings in Barrie. (Ontario.) Kathy's shop, Life
Itself, is across the intersection (5 Points) from the crater that was
the Thai restaurant that apparently exploded. Kathy's fine, she wasn't
there, and she thinks the shop is probably ok. (Her windows face away
from where the explosion came from.) She can't get down there, the
whole downtown core is closed and probably will be for the next week
or so. 8 businesses (including another tattoo shop, Pushin' Ink) were
destroyed. All of these old buildings (1875) have apartments above
them, and everyone got out fine, but are now homeless. One firefighter
has a dislocated shoulder. AMAZING that no one was hurt. Downtown is
usually very busy with pedestrian traffic that time of night.
Any video or photos you see right now of the pile of rubble that used
to be the building are being taken from in front of Kathy's shop.
No one knows what happened yet, as I said it's an old building and I'm
thinking boiler or old fuel oil tank. The explosion apparently
happened in the basement. Blew the front door and all of the windows
across the street.
Anyway, Kathy's fine, we're all fine. Sad, though, to lose old
buildings like that. This was truly the very heart of Barrie.
Here's an article with some video.
