Bike Storage (New One On Me)

Well here is a new one for storing a bike just when you may have thought you
hear it all. I was visiting a local vet's home paying my respects when what
I thought was a resident approached me. Hey! You ride Harley? Is that your

still ride at 92 all though it is a 3 wheeler, I asked I did not know you
could have a bike here. He said he was not a resident he was visiting and

charge shipping a storing vehicles and motorcycles. Back then bikes were a
lot tougher but they were not as reliable. One thing lead to another and I
asked him how do you store your bike over the winter? Well, I have a shed
that I park it in, put in a fuel stabilizer and use mothballs. Mothball I
said? He said yep been doing it since WWII. What do you do with mothballs?
he said I put about 6 up each tail pipe and the same in the air box and the
seal the openings. What the heck does that do I asked? He said I was too
young to remember but he said when ships were mothballed they were just
that. They covered the interior of the ships with mothballs and sealed it
up. The mothballs evaporated displaced the oxygen and prevented rust.
Well, they do the same thing for the bikes innards he said. Prevents rust
in the cylinder walls no need for fogging or any of that fancy stuff. Back
in the day we use Cosmoline to preserve the exterior and mothballs to
preserve the innards. He said they also keep the mice and rats out too that
was a real big problem back then. The little critters would build nests in
the exhaust system and air cleaner along with tearing up the inside of the
vehicles when you use mothballs it stopped them. This guy was sharp as a
tack and got around like he was a hell a lot younger. We shot the breeze
and parted what a hell of a good guy.
