Not a double - a double double.
Ice would defeat the purpose.

Sure, but I just leave it in 1WD for that rather than sweat out trying
change it over and over again while riding down the road. I rode it all
last winter through ice and snow in 1WD with no problems. The shifter in
its stock position would make it difficult to change while driving, but
there's a tank mount adapter available. You would also want to make sure
the pusher isn't slipping (spinning faster than the hack wheel) when you put
it in 2WD. Even in snow and mud, the 2WD option makes turning more
difficult.

Thanks for the java, I'll grab a Boston Cream as well.

Here in southern Ont. last night we got about 5" of snow, it rained a bit
this afternoon and it's freezing rain now. Should be just a dandy commute
Monday.

Now where did I see that sign for Harley snow tires...

Thanks.

It was one of the coldest, wettest Novembers ever here and we are
expecting a foot of snow tonight. Reminds me of 1968.

You must have had snow tires (or chains?)... we can get some real slick
snow conditions here, and cars strewn all over the road on steep hills,
tires screaming and steam rising as they boil ice on the road surface.

There's a guy I see riding all over town in every kind of weather;
he's got a small British-built sidecar on a Honda CB400. This is him
on the upper left (his wife is the photographer):

http://www.redcoatphoto.com/tsawwassen07-1.htm

I don't know how he manages the snow with only one drive wheel.
If I were to take any of my bikes on the road tonight I think
it would just flop over in the packed snow.

However, I've also got a VW trike. How well it'll work on icy roads
compared to a sidecar I dunno. (Do '70's Beetle transaxles supply torque
to both wheels?) I haven't tried it yet; but at least the wheels won't
slide out from under me.

Saturday I rode over to Republic HD to get my bike inspected in short
sleeves. I did see some folks in leather but I think they were just
passing through and may have come from points north. I think it's
unseasonably warm right now. I had to drop the A/C down to 74 cause I
was sweating watching football on TV.

Since I remember having to push one out, no they don't.

Nope, no snow tires or chains. The roads get cleared here fairly quick, and
even when they're snow covered I have don't have many problems provided I
take it slow.

Flopping over obviously isn't an issue, and the 1WD will get you through a
lot of stuff. I don't carry much in the hack so even if I was in 2WD I
don't think it would do a whole lot. I was talking to another guy with a
Ural who rode in the snow and when he looked back at the tracks he left he
said the hack wheel looked like it was just skimming the top of the snow.
Things would likely be different if you loaded the hack with weight.

Only one way to find out, dress warm.

You guys are going to love this site, if you aren't already on to it.

http://www.pashnit.com/bikes/sidecar.htm

I wish I didn't find this shit. I just waste hours surfing thru the
links. Need a life, need sunshine, warm weather and cheap gas. Will
settle for the first two!
