Default Wife wants an ATV

We're retired and pushing 70. The Wife wants us to get an ATV. We'll pull
it behind our truck camper in a utility trailer. We'll be riding double and
I would like to put a snow plow blade on the front to make life easier if
possible.

I need suggestions for what will fill the requirement. My Son suggested a
Polaris. I don't know one from the other. Any comments please?

Get a machine built for two people. Can-Am, Polaris and Arctic Cat all have
2 Up machines where you ride one behind the other like a motorcycle.
Polaris, Yamaha, Arctic Cat, Kawasaki all have Side by Side machines. Side
by Side is just like it sounds, you have two bucket seats side by side.
Side by Side machines are a wider, taller, heavier and more expensive than 2
Up machines but if my intentions were a machine for two people that's what I
would get.
My choice for Side by Side would be the Yamaha Rhino. They are the smallest
(physically) and have a good track record.
For 2 Up I like the Can-Am. You can get them from 400cc to 800cc. Even a
400cc machine has plenty of power to haul two 200 lb people around.

This is likely to start the great debate, and I apologize in advance.

This 'whose is better' is similar to Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge. There are a
lot of people out there who swear by their Polarises. Myself, I wouldn't
touch one with a pole. I've been driving pretty much exclusively Honda dirt
bikes and ATVs since 1980 or so. They tend to be a little more expensive,
but worth it in my opinion. Today Honda doesn't make a 2 up machine, but
they will by this coming summer see
http://powersports.honda.com/2008models/#BigRed

If you are a beginning rider, and plan to ride double on anything but the
easiest terrain, I'd suggest either a side by side machine or one designed
to carry 2 people like a Polaris Sportsman Touring, or CanAm Outlander Max.
You can add a 'buddy seat' and footrests for a passenger to almost any
machine, but you affect the stability and therefore your safety by doing so.
My wife and I drive Honda Ranchers and we both have buddy seats and pegs,
but we're not hauling other adults around either. We bring our kids (8 and
12 year olds). The 12 year old is getting her own machine in the spring,
because it's getting to be too cumbersome to haul her around on the back...

Every time we go on a group ride, a Polaris breaks. Usually it's lack of
maintenance: The older machines would overheat if you didn't keep the
radiators rinsed out. I honestly don't know if Polaris has changed the
design to keep the mud and crap from piling up in the radiator yet or not. I
do know that the people I know that ride them all carry a 2 liter bottle of
water everywhere they go just in case the need to rinse off the radiator. I
also know that I've owned liquid cooled, oil cooled and air cooled dirt
bikes and ATVs, and I've NEVER had to stop in the middle of a ride to clean
a radiator cause I'm overheating. Have I ever broken a Honda? Heck yeah. But
my impression is that the frequency of repair is less often than some
others...Your mileage may vary!

Happy Trails!
Jeff

I would go with the Rhino they are only 3 inches wider but a little
longer. In my opinion the Polaris is nice but I think all Polaris are high
maintenance but that is just my opinion.

Many thanks for the response. You all have provided new insight which is
why I inquired with this group. I'll be checking the products recommended.

Thanks again.

I drive an 05 Grizzly 660 with the back storage/seat and my wife's drives
and 06 Rhino 660 and will probably not go back to an atv since the Rhino
will do anything the Grizzly will do and sometimes better. Your best bet is
to go to a few different dealers and see if they will let you test drive
some. Before we bought the Rhino the dealer let us take it out for some
riding and she was immediately hooked. She drove the Grizzly before and I
rode a Big Bear 400 but that is now our yard rat. You might like one better
than the other but everyone will have their own opinion on what they like
and could be brand loyal. Me I am all blue blooded but that doesn't mean
the other brands stink. It is just everyone's own preference. See about
riding some and what feels comfortable. If you do go with a side by side
make sure the trails you plan on riding will allow them and also they are
built for them. The trails we ride in Pittsburg, NH were built using a
Rhino but some other trails in Southern NH don't allow them. go figure.

You might even want to look into two seperate machines. If you bought two
400cc machines, it would probably cost just the same as one side by side or
two-up machine (700 - 800cc). Not sure if you have ever driven an ATV by
the way you write, so you may not want to go much larger than that. You
could probably fit both on a small utility trailer if you look around for
the right specifications and size. Personally I would stick with Honda or
Yamaha, but that is just my opinion.

YZF 450

Just kidding, I have no experience with 2up or SxS machines, , but had
to post SOMETHING.

If you didn't know, the YZF 450 is a 2-wheel drive racing machine,
exactly what you DON'T want. .
